Garden Group Beautifies The Commons’ Campus

Members of The Commons Garden Group spent the summer using their green thumbs to beautify our grounds with both flowers and vegetable plants. Their love of gardening has added to everyone’s enjoyment of our beautiful campus.

The community garden came to life with sunflowers, zinnias, verbena and geranium, and vegetables such as tomatoes, beans, peas, garlic, squash and herbs. The club was also instrumental in helping with choosing the flowers in the planters near the Russell entrance, Flint, and the wall behind Lemon Pippin. Additionally, members have been involved with renovations to the circular garden in front of Russell.

Educated and inspired.

Inspiration for this year’s gardens came from a Garden Group field trip to the Framingham, MA, Garden in the Woods. Members received a guided tour of the 45-acre property run by the Native Plant Trust, the nation’s first plant conservation organization.

Group members admired the eskers (ridges made of sand and gravel) and steep-sided valleys created by retreating glaciers. They hope to introduce more New England-native plants to the grounds and plan to visit Garden in the Woods again to learn more about how to grow them.

The Garden Group has certainly had a busy and productive summer, and we thank them for all their work on behalf of the community!

Residents interested in gardening are always welcome to attend a Garden Club meeting on the first Monday of the month.
